Have you ever thought of volunteering? We are always on the look out for new and willing volunteers. You don't have to live the in village but if you have just a few hours spare on a weekly or even ad hoc basis, we would love to hear from you. Or do you have any particular skills or experience that you think we might benefit from and would like to contribute? You don't need any retail experience just a pleasant friendly smile and a "can do" attitude. Please send us a message.
The benefits of volunteering can be enormous. Volunteering can help you make friends particularly if you are new to the area, you will learn new skills and enjoy a sense of well being and community spirit. If you are interested in volunteering to either work in the shop or on the committee, please email us and someone will be in touch for an informal chat about what is involved.
Our speciality bread is delivered fresh every Thursdays from Taylors of Bruton , a local and award winning bakery in Somerset

The official name of the shop is Kington St Michael Village Shop Limited and is registered with the Financial Conduct Authority as a Registered Society under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014.
The shop was purchased when its original owner was going to close the shop but retain the Post Office, in April 2007. Using funds raised by selling shares at £5.00 each; fundraising activities and grants obtained from various organisations, the village became owners at the end of April 2007 and opened after the first May bank holiday. A committee was set up to run the shop as a community facility and volunteers recruited from within the village.
In April 2008 the Royal Mail closed the separate Post Office and later that year the Post Point was set up in the shop to facilitate the posting of letters; small & medium parcels; signed for and next day delivery mail. This was a self-service with the shop volunteers trained to help. The shop had a contract with the Royal Mail costing nearly £1,000 a year, sadly in 2021 the business decision had to be made to close the Post Point as the technology needed and the costs incurred no longer made it a viable proposition.
The shop has, other than for a short period, been staffed entirely by volunteers. In March 2020, coronavirus hit the UK and this had a significant impact on the shop as many of the volunteers had to step aside as they were over 70. Their shoes were filled by others and the shop became essential even offering a free delivery service to those that were shielding. Most of those volunteers have now happily returned to working in the shop along with a paid Shop Manager who was appointed in September 2020. The shop is now managed by a Shop Manager in conjunction with a committee of 10 volunteers all with varying skills and experience.
A community shop plays an important role in any village particularly in helping the elderly, vulnerable, or isolated by giving them a safe environment in which to shop and meet others. It also allows us to support local businesses by stocking their products fostering a sense of community. If everyone were to spend just £10 a week in the shop we would be able to improve the facilities and products even more and donate money to local projects benefitting even more people. We also believe we are supporting people to reduce their carbon footprint by buying local and using their cars less.
Our current committee includes:
Chair: Vacant
Treasurer: Kevin Henderson
Secretary: Vicki Disney
Jo Pilkington
Ken Reeve-Rawlings
